Playing with books

UCT runs a summer school programme every year in January. Since discovering it three years ago I’ve started signing up for anything that looked interesting and there are always a few creative courses that catch my eye. So today I started a week long series of sessions on narrative techniques working with altered books.

Our first morning was a fascinating beginning of looking at work of other artists including Ehren Reed (http://ehrenreed.com/home.html) who creates beautiful mixed media artworks. We then got to choose our books that we’ll work with for the week and started experimenting with a variety of altering (some might say defacing) techniques. I can’t tell you how much fun it was to have carte blanche with a book – cutting out, painting over, drawing on the pictures, tearing out pages – all those things we were forbidden to do as children.

These are the results of my first tentative steps…
